I hate you California. I hate you so goddamn much.

I hate people who bitch about "activist judges." It's a load of crap. The people, through their representatives, make the law. The law is interpreted by the judiciary and enforced by the executive. If you don't like the way the judiciary interprets the law, then change the law to clarify it so the judiciary knows how to interpret it. It's that simple.

Now here's the problem; people are clamoring for the Calfornia judiciary to overturn Proposition 8. They can't. They just can't, and if they try they should be shot. Because that honestly would be judicial activism. You can't tell people that an amendment to the state constitution is unconstitutional, because by definition it isn't. It's superconstitutional, it's outside their purview, it's none of their business.

I want gay people to have all the same rights that I do, including the right to marry. I believe that marriage is a legal state that need not be fundamentally tied to religion, and that the religious types should just shut up, follow whatever rules their particular sect has agreed on, and let everyone else do the same. I really honestly do.

But I also believe, with absolute rock-solid certainty, that gay people in California need to shut up and accept that they can't get married for now. I'm sorry, but they just have to live with it. Until we can all do some outreach and convince their fellow Californians that they aren't any different from the rest of us, they're just going to have to deal.

It is important to make sure their rights are recognized. It is vital that we do so in a way that respects and keeps whole the mechanisms by which we govern ourselves.

When I come to power, today will be a national holiday.

There are a few women who work in my organization. Some of them are more or less political than others. Some I can have a reasoned debate with. The argument I'm running into nowadays is that regardless of her policies and positions, electing Sarah Palin to the vice presidency would be a good thing for women because it would be one step closer to breaking the ultimate glass ceiling. These are the same women who voted for Hillary, for the same reason. Not positions, not policies, not history. Genitals.

To those voters I present as simple and straightforward an argument as I can: Sarah Palin is a sock puppet. She was chosen because the McCain campaign needed a pro-life female, and that's it. The unprecedented lockdown on who she talks to and what she says is ample evidence that who she is and what she believes are of little consequence to the campaign. She is a mouth that will dutifully parrot their lines and has the appropriate reproductive bits attached.

Let me draw a comparison for you: Let's say Pat Buchanan is running for president. At the eleventh hour he realizes "Oh crap, I need a vice president." His advisors tell him that he can't have a white dude, because that would just confirm what everyone knows; he is, as Cornell West once put it, a racial arsonist. So he goes out and finds some black republican that he barely knows, maybe Michael Steele, and offers him the spot, so long as he's willing to march to Buchanan's drum. And we end up with a black vice presidential candidate parroting Buchanan's famous line about "First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans."

Michael Steele becomes a tool. Just like Sarah Palin is a tool. If that's that's the only way for a woman to get into the white house, making herself useful to a man, then exactly what fucking glass ceiling do you think you're breaking?
